We are seeking opinions on the future of the classroom-facing mathematics subject associations. This paper arises from reflection on the duty of trustees of a charitable organisation (such as the MA) to periodically consider whether the charitable aims of the body would be better served by amalgamation with others. It should be read in conjunction with Sue Pope’s excellent article on the subject, published in Mathematics Teaching (the journal of ATM) and elsewhere.
Representatives from AMET, ATM, the MA, NAMA and NANAMIC met at the Royal Society on 4 December 2017 to discuss the future of mathematics subject associations and the possibility of forming a new single association for mathematics education. Notes from that meeting are here.
